A ductless mini-split air handler is an ideal solution if you want a zoned air conditioning system but have no ducts in your house. There are two main components in a mini-split system, the outdoor unit and an inside air handler similar to central air conditioning.
These units are an efficient cooling solution connected by a conduit containing the power cable, refrigerant tubing, the suction tubing, and a condensate drain. Installation costs are typically lower than an HVAC system and easy on energy bills making it a popular option.
Mini-splits are popular retrofits because they are an indoor air handling unit that doesn’t require costly duct work, making them much easier to install than a traditional HVAC system. These ductless units are also an energy efficient system as the cooled air is not going through duct work, notorious for loss of efficiency. There are a variety of choices, including the single zone system or a multi-zone system with a wide range of options.
You can install up to four outdoor units depending on needs and indoor unit sizes. They can either be mounted on the floor or done as a wall installation. They can even be recessed into the ceiling if that's a better choice. The outdoor compressor / outdoor condenser is typically small, but needs to be a larger unit when more indoor units are connected.
This type of energy efficient unit offers easy temperature control with programming options, much like a thermostat. Some smart air conditioners even have sensors able to detect when someone enters the room and adjusts the temperature. You can even direct which way the air flows with some types.
Most models come with a remote control app you connect to your phone, or set up with smart systems like Nest or Alexa. In general the mini split air conditioner is know for quiet operation and continuous airflow, low energy consumption and minimal energy losses.
If your home has rooms in the attic with limited head room, than a floor mounted air conditioner offers a great solution. While offering all the same benefits of a wall or ceiling mounted unit (like zone controls), it has the added convenience of easier maintenance because a ladder is not required to change an air filter for instance.
The floor-mounted version of the ductless air handling system is mounted on the floor or near the floor. Being that it is closer to everyone in the room, they feel temperature change quicker than from a unit installed higher up.
Mini-split cooling systems are a little on the expensive side to install. Prices can range from a few thousand for a basic system up to $18,000 or more to outfit an entire house. Pricing is dependent on the scope of work and the model you choose. Call us for a general idea on how much your project may cost.
Once this type of system is installed it's permanent. Pipes are connected through walls and units mounted or recessed means you can't move them without added expense and of course outdoor units are secured for safety reasons. In some cases it is not possible to connect through a wall directly behind the unit, leaving unsightly pipes visible. Even when the unit is in the perfect placement and pipes hidden from sight, the unit takes up wall space. It can be unsightly, like a big rectangle just hanging there. A drop ceiling recess is one way to overcome this issue, but is more expensive of course. Multi zone mini split systems become a permanent fixture in your home once installed.
Another issue is installing the correct size for your needs. Once calculations are done it can be tempting to go with a smaller unit, but that can backfire if the unit is underpowered. If it has to work harder, it might fail faster. There are energy savings when compared to other types of AC units, but most people don't think about that with a this type of system. The installation process is where initial costs lie and should be figured into your overall cost / benefit calculation.
